Since the first traders
travelled the ‘Silk Road’ before the dawn of Christianity, the western world
has marvelled at the skills and ingenuity of the Chinese people.
Wise Monkey is proud to be
able to share with you some of the history of those traditional skills through
our series of silk covered Journals, Books, Stationery and Gift items.
Each journal offers a brief
historical introduction to a variety of ancient traditions and skills. All are
case-bound by hand and finished with a covering of finest embroidered silk,
using patterns developed some 250 years BC. We start our journey with the
History of Chinese Silk and Embroidery.
You will see a selection of
the finest silks, exquisitely embroidered in the tradition begun by the common
people of Ancient China.

ancient patterns and colour ways, some of which may be familiar to you. They
have been around for more than 2,250 years. In our brief historical
introductions we cover those subjects that best depict the traditions, skills
and ingenuity of the people of China. Amongst these are, Foot binding and
